Why Fortnite has become a relevant platform for your universe
Fortnite has become an experience platform
Fortnite is no longer just a battle royale game. It is also a platform where creators design and publish their own experiences: games, social worlds, narrative journeys, concerts, festivals, and events.
According to information presented by Epic Games in 2026, Fortnite has more than 75 million monthly active users. In May 2026, 47% of playtime was spent in community-created experiences.
These two figures point to a simple fact: players do not come only for the main game mode. They also come to discover new universes and different ways to play.
A new space to bring a universe to life
For a brand or IP, the goal is not to place a logo in Fortnite. It is to create an experience with a genuine reason to exist: tell a story, introduce a character, extend a release, bring a community together, offer a new way to experience music, or create a recurring event.
Fortnite makes it possible to reach players across multiple screens and evolve an experience over time. A project can begin with an island, then expand with new content, challenges, characters, or events. The format must remain true to your universe and to what players actually want to do.
Artists, labels, media companies, brands, and rights holders can already turn their universes into playable Fortnite experiences. Developments announced by Epic in 2026, particularly around its IP Partner Program, are accelerating this momentum by opening up new opportunities to collaborate around major properties.
What kinds of universes can come to life in Fortnite?
A Fortnite experience can extend an existing universe or provide the first playable setting for a new story.
For an existing property
Adapting an IP requires the right balance between fidelity and creative freedom. We work from its approved elements, its rules, and what players expect from it. The game should feel true to the universe without becoming a simple showcase.
You have a universe but not yet a format? That is a strong place to start. We can begin by defining what players could do within it.
For a brand
Create a discovery experience, a challenge-based game, an event space, or a world that gives your products and commitments a new role. The aim is to give audiences something to do, not merely something to look at.
For an artist, label, or music project
Turn an aesthetic, a track, or a tour into a playable experience. Players can move through a setting, follow a rhythm, choose a path, take on challenges, or encounter the artist in a form designed for gameplay.
For a film, series, or franchise
Bring a setting, scene, mythology, or characters to life beyond the screen. An island can support a release, extend a campaign, create a touchpoint between seasons, or give fans a new way to explore the universe.
For a media or cultural organization
Create an interactive work, a music game, an educational experience, or a shared event. The project can deliver a clear editorial point of view while remaining accessible and enjoyable to play.
What SoWhen? actually designs and produces
A Fortnite project is more than creating a map. We build a complete experience, from the initial idea through launch.
Discovery and scoping
We clarify your universe, audiences, objectives, rights-related constraints, timeline, and available resources. This step establishes whether Fortnite is the right platform and which format is realistic.
Concept
We propose a playable idea: what players understand when they arrive, what they do, what they discover, and what makes them want to return. We also define the tone, art direction, narrative, and core mechanics.
Creation
We design the required environments, characters, interfaces, animations, effects, and audio elements. When relevant, we integrate your 3D assets or create any missing elements.
UEFN development
UEFN stands for Unreal Editor for Fortnite. It is the development environment used to build experiences in Fortnite. We use it to create spaces, program game rules, integrate progression systems, and test the project.
Gameplay
Gameplay is what players actually do: explore, run, solve, choose, collect, cooperate, compete, or create. We design it to be intuitive without lengthy explanations and to serve your universe.
Publishing
We prepare the publishing process, testing, fixes, and everything required to make the island available. A Fortnite island is published with an island code or access link, depending on the chosen setup.
Launch and ongoing support
We can help prepare launch content, key moments, social media amplification, and future updates to the experience. The goal is to give players a reason to visit and then a reason to return.
Selected projects that show how we work
We do not apply the same format to every project. These examples show how a universe, an audience, and an objective can shape the design.
ARTE Riff Mountain: turning music culture into a world you can play
ARTE Riff Mountain is an ARTE and SoWhen? co-production developed in partnership with Hellfest. The experience transforms metal culture into a Fortnite world featuring a mountain, four clans, quests, puzzles, a narrative, and multiple ways to play.
What the project demonstrates: a cultural media organization can enter Fortnite with a strong editorial point of view. Gameplay does more than keep players busy; it introduces them to a culture, artists, and influences. The island was also designed as an evolving space that can host new experiences over time.
Turbo Killer Experience: journeying through music
Within ARTE Riff Mountain, the Carpenter Brut experience transforms “Turbo Killer” into an interactive race. Up to four players move through a gamified show where vehicles, rhythm, visual effects, and action respond to the music.
What the project demonstrates: a track can become a game mechanic. For an artist or label, Fortnite can serve as an interactive stage provided the experience remains true to the music’s energy and aesthetic.
Pogo Car Crash Control Music Runner: playing to the beat
In the world of ARTE Riff Mountain, music is not just heard it is experienced and played. Developed in collaboration with Wagram Music and Panenka around a track by Pogo Car Crash Control, this music runner offers a rhythmic course where players progress in direct connection with the music.
The experience is part of ARTE Riff Mountain’s lore: players and their clans follow the Riff Divinity as they train to fight the threat of the Mainstream, collecting inspiration throughout the course.
What the project demonstrates: a track can become a complete playable experience. Rhythm, narrative, and gameplay work together to extend the musical universe beyond listening and give players an active way to explore it.
Dreamscape Escapades: creating our own testing ground
With Dreamscape Escapades, SoWhen? designed and published its own Fortnite island. This project allows us to experiment directly with UEFN’s capabilities, test game mechanics, and evaluate our design choices against real-world platform usage.
What the project demonstrates: we do not use UEFN only for client projects. We also develop our own experiences to test, learn, and continually improve the way we design Fortnite projects.
HP: extending the experience beyond the screen
For HP, SoWhen? designed a Fortnite game that also works in a physical setting, with an interaction mode that requires neither a controller nor a keyboard. The project was showcased at VivaTech.
What the project demonstrates: a Fortnite island can become an event platform. It can live online, at a booth, at a company headquarters, or during an employee event provided the setup is planned from the design stage.
Alstom: making an industrial universe playable
For Alstom, SoWhen? created a Fortnite game that offers a new way to discover the world of mobility and rail transportation. The project shows how a seemingly corporate subject can be translated into objectives, exploration, and actions that players can easily understand.
What the project demonstrates: a brand experience can convey a complex universe without taking the form of a presentation. Players learn by doing.
Why work with SoWhen? on your Fortnite project
From creative intent to playable experience
Because a successful Fortnite project requires both a deep understanding of the universe and genuine production expertise.
We know how to turn creative intent into a playable experience. Our approach brings together art direction, writing, game design, real-time 3D, UEFN development, animation, sound, motion capture, and production.
We work at the intersection of brands, entertainment, and culture. This breadth of experience helps us understand a wide range of constraints: protecting an established property, supporting a release, bringing a fan community together, conveying a message, or creating a live event.
UEFN as a tool in service of the project
We do not see UEFN as an end in itself. The tool serves the project. We select the systems and level of detail that create value for players and support your objectives.
SoWhen? is an Epic Games Unreal Engine Gold Partner.
A vision announced by Epic in 2026 is progressively bringing Unreal Engine, UEFN, and Fortnite closer together across creation, live operations, and distribution. For a studio like SoWhen?, this confirms the value of approaching projects with two requirements in mind: genuine production quality and an experience designed to last.
How does a project work?
- Discovery and scoping: We discuss your universe, objectives, audiences, rights, and timeline.
- Concept: We define what players will experience and the form the project will take.
- Production: Our teams create the environments, characters, mechanics, systems, and content.
- Approval: We coordinate the necessary testing, feedback, and approvals with your teams and rights holders.
- Publishing: We prepare the island for release and define how players will access it.
- Launch: We help you build visibility for the project and plan its next steps.
- Scope, budget, and timeline are defined according to the project’s ambition. A short, focused experience does not require the same resources as an evolving narrative world.
You do not need to come to us with a fully formed idea
You can contact us with a universe, a date, a release, an audience, or simply a question. We will help you identify what could become a compelling Fortnite experience and what should not be forced into one.
FAQ
Here are some answers to the questions most frequently asked during an initial contact. These are general guidelines; we can provide you with more specific information about your situation as we discuss it further.
What is UEFN?
UEFN is a version of Unreal Engine (UE) equipped with custom functions that allow for content creation on the Fortnite platform.
UEFN stands for Unreal Editor For Fortnite.
Is my island part of the Fortnite battle royale game?
Put down the oars!
EPIC GAMES has opened its virtual universe, independently of the game mode, so that everyone can create their own events and design lasting personalized worlds.
Which community will I reach?
Fortnite currently boasts over 450 million players, and every day millions of players come seeking original content, different from the classic Battle Royale.
Fortnite is increasingly resembling a virtual social network, becoming the favorite playground and meeting place for Generations Y and Z.
60% of players are content creators in Fortnite.
80,000 islands have already been created in less than a year.
Can I organize a private event on Fortnite?
Absolutely, you can organize private events, open to individuals who have the access link.
Can I import my 3D assets into Fortnite? (products, objects...)
UEFN allows you to import your own custom content into its environment.
SoWhen? can therefore import your customized resources such as static or skeletal meshes, animations, textures, or sounds and use them on your islands.
The original elements that are created, imported, and published in UEFN remain your property, and you can remove them at any time.
What ROI can I expect from my brand island on Fortnite?
Your Fortnite island will allow you to expand your current community and build a strong, lasting connection with it. Additionally, you can enrich it by inviting your existing community to join the events created at a low cost. Indeed, from your Fortnite universe, you can capture videos and photos to share freely on your websites and social media. The raw material is already there, there’s no need to start from scratch to produce these contents! Finally, as with any media, you can plan cross-media mechanics to retain, reward, and surprise your audience.
How much does a Fortnite experience cost?
There is no single price. The budget depends on the format, the number of environments and characters, the level of 3D creation, the game mechanics, the content to be produced, rights approvals, and launch support. After an initial discussion, we can define the scope and provide a tailored estimate.
How long does it take to create a Fortnite island?
A few weeks may be enough for a prototype or a simple experience. A more ambitious, narrative, or evolving project can take several months. The timeline depends primarily on the level of creation involved, the number of review rounds, and IP-related approvals.
What is the difference between Fortnite Creative and UEFN?
Fortnite Creative is the tool available directly within Fortnite for creating experiences with ready-to-use devices. UEFN, or Unreal Editor for Fortnite, is a more comprehensive environment built on Unreal Engine. It provides greater control over environments, assets, systems, and gameplay.
Can an existing IP or licensed property be used in Fortnite?
Yes, provided the necessary rights have been secured and the project complies with both platform rules and the rights holder’s requirements. We address these constraints from the scoping stage. An IP cannot simply be transferred as-is: the approved elements, tone, characters, music, and permitted uses must all be defined.
What can Fortnite bring to an IP?
A new way to explore a universe, bring fans together, and create a participatory experience. Fortnite can extend a creative work, serve as a testing ground, or become a meeting point for audiences that do not necessarily engage through the same media channels.
Is Fortnite relevant for an artist or music project?
Yes, when the music and visual universe can inspire meaningful player actions. A track can become a journey, a race, a rhythm challenge, or a space to explore. The goal is to let players experience the artist’s music and universe in a new way, rather than reducing the music to a soundtrack.
Is Fortnite a good fit for a film or series?
Yes, particularly to support a release, extend a season, introduce a setting, or bring a fan community together. The format must be designed as a complete game in its own right, with a clear action for the player.
How do you attract players to a Fortnite island?
First, you need a clear idea and an enjoyable experience. The launch can then draw on your own channels, content creators, scheduled moments, events, editorial news, and updates. Visibility is no substitute for game quality; it helps players discover it.
How do you choose a UEFN studio?
Look at the studio’s actually published projects, the range of universes it has worked with, its ability to explain gameplay, its production expertise, and how openly it addresses constraints. Also ask who handles design, development, testing, publishing, and launch.
Do you need a specific idea before contacting SoWhen?
No. A specific idea can help, but it is not required. A universe, a release, an objective, or a desire to explore is enough to get started. Part of our role is to turn an intention into a playable concept.
