AN EVERMORE RELEVANT LIVING DYNAMIC WORK WHICH QUESTIONS US ON OUR INDIVIDUAL ROLES IN THE CHANGES OUR WORLD IS GOING THROUGH
An immersive artistic work in Virtual Reality that we co-produced with its creator Mathieu Pradat.
1st part: “The Crowd”
Release date: Late 2019
Format: Immersive phygital experience – Mixed Reality
This immersive phygital work evolves over the course of its encounters with audiences around the world. “Encounters”, composed of 3 episodes (The Crowd, The Birds, The Colossi) and an epilogue, leads us to reflect deeply on the future of our planet. It particularly emphasizes the power of collective action, showing that multiple individual actions can lead to exclusive or inclusive behavioral changes. This essential individual realization makes us question not only how we listen, but our relationships with others and with nature. “Encounters” reminds us that we are part of a Whole.
SoWhen? actively chose to work on an artistic project for the general public in partnership with La Prairie Productions, an artistic work by Mathieu Pradat.
The “Encounters” project was hosted by the Quito Alliance Française (Charles Vix) and the first episode took place at the UDLA (Universidad de Las Américas) in the capital of Ecuador, Quito, in late 2019.
Florent Brillet, our graphic designer, brought all his knowledge and expertise to this wonderful human and creative adventure.
“The Crowd” is produced in Virtual Reality (VR) and is designed to be a multi-sensory, participatory and adaptive project.
Audience members are invited to walk barefoot into the water and wear a VR and audio headset. Their immersive experience starts by heading towards a small group of characters who huddle up and turn their backs upon seeing you, throwing quick glances over at the approaching visitors. Punctuated by different phases of interaction, users are faced with successive rejection as the group of characters grows and the virtual water level rises.
Each participant reacts differently, some laugh, others question/are suspicious, recoil, or seek a way to communicate with the mysterious characters in an attempt to stop the harmful effects/negative consequences.
The work, which is experienced in group workshops, is directly generated piece by piece as it encounters the public. The graphic designers, developers and director Mathieu Pradat adjust the interactive scenes from one sequence to the next. The work becomes truly enriched by the shared collective experiences.
In fact, the questions asked by the public are then incorporated into the epilogue which will take place in another festival on another continent (more info to come).
